Changes introduced in the 2014 edition of IEC 60079-14 included the removal of the enclosure volume criterion to determine whether to use a barrier gland and its replacement by a criterion based on cable length. No evidence was presented to support this change. The enclosure volume criterion had been adopted as a result of work done by ERA for EEMUA in 1976. Follow-up work done by Intertek for EEMUA since the publication of IEC 60079-14:2014 has confirmed that the ERA work was correct. This information sheet provides more of the background to this work and the recommended actions.
