Introduction

The e-learning training course is positioned at the awareness level and is an optional precursor to working through EEMUA Publication 191 and can be used as part of preparations for higher level training courses for engineers, operators and technicians. On completion of the desktop version, immediate certification is provided for the registered user that launched or purchased the course.

The content of this course has been approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), a Professional Engineering Institution licensed by the Engineering Council in the UK. Completing this e-learning module, including the test at the end, is equivalent to 30 minutes of CPD.

The course covers:

  • How alarm systems have developed.

  • What is and isn't an alarm?

  • Design principles for alarms.

  • Events and Alerts.

  • Nuisance alarms.

  • Alarm floods.

  • Poor definition.

  • Prioritisation.

  • Implications of these challenges.

  • Alarms in practice.

  • Prioritising alarms — three levels of priority.

  • Benchmark values.

  • Alarm performance.

  • Prevention.

This module is recommended for both discipline and project-focused engineers from a variety of backgrounds who want to gain an introduction to the fundamental principles for design, management and procurement of alarm systems. The course is also relevant to engineers and managers from operating companies as well as specialist contractors and equipment suppliers.

The course is primarily concerned with alarm systems provided for people operating industrial processes. These include alarm systems in industries such as chemical manufacturing, power generation, oil and gas extraction and refining, and others.

Either completing (but not passing) or passing this e-learning course has no bearing on entry into the EEMUA-supported Alarm Systems training course, but you may choose to take this as a natural progression.
