Bio: Andy is a risk consultant specialising in human factors and process safety. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Loughborough University and a PhD from Edinburgh University. Starting his consulting career in 1996, Andy has worked independently since 2005.

He has supported numerous clients across the oil, gas, chemical, and other process industries both in the UK and internationally, on both operational facilities and new construction projects. He was the lead author of the 3rd Edition of EEMUA 201 (control room design), published in 2019, and the 4th Edition of EEMUA 191 (alarm management), published 2024."

Presentation Summary:

This presentation examines the integration of human factors to managing safety risks in major hazard industries. It will explore how understanding the factors that influence human reliability and performance can lead to a better understanding of how systems function overall. Attendees will discover how to harness the strengths of human performance, mitigate risks from its limitations, and design systems where human and technical elements work seamlessly together for enhanced safety and efficiency.
